Romantic Victorian Gothic Wedding
For couples drawn to the macabre, this romantic Victorian gothic wedding was to die for.
Alyx & Jay’s Romantic Victorian gothic Wedding – Getting Ready
Alyx and Jay described their wedding as gothic meets romantic Victorian. Alyx said it was incredibly important to her and Jay that their wedding felt true to what they both love –the spooky and the gothic. The Lougheed House in Calgary offered the perfect setting for their romantic Victorian gothic wedding. I had the incredible opportunity to have their wedding featured in the 64th print issue of Rock N Roll Bride Magazine. You can also check out some more of Alyx and Jay’s images in this wedding planning blog post.
Alyx and Jay got ready at the Lougheed House that afternoon. The stunning Victorian mansion, which doubles as a museum, offered each a getting ready space with so much character. They were not planning on doing a first look before the ceremony. Alyx wore a beautiful Victorian inspired wedding dress that was a match made in heaven for their wedding theme. Her long, cascading veil, flowing effortlessly behind her was beyond perfection. The black and white silhouette portrait below will forever remind me of Emily from Corpse Bride. Ellie with Small Flower Floral Studio absolutely understood the assignment with the red black and purple colour palette of the florals.
Ceremony
Alyx and Jay got married in the drawing room of the Lougheed house. A stunning living space of the mansion with elegant crown moulding, and a gorgeous fireplace that serves as the focal point of the space. Alyx said that for her bridal look, she wanted to look like a ghost. I am still haunted by how beautiful she looked as she descended the staircase to a rendition of Famous Last Words (by My Chemical Romance) played and recorded by Jay’s dad. It left Jay absolutely speechless as he threw his hands together when he saw her for the first time.
Alyx and Jay’s ceremony was officiated by a dear friend of theirs. This added another sentimental touch to their wedding day. In addition, they shared personal vows to one another, followed by a handfasting ceremony.
Portraits in the Beaulieu gardens
One of the most notable things about Alyx and Jay’s wedding was that the wedding party wasn’t divided by bride’s side or groom’s side. They wanted their friends to be comfortable and happy, rather than worry about replicating a gendered structure that did not align with them.
For their portraits, they wanted to emanate Gomez and Morticia vibes. I think we absolutely nailed the vision! I will never stop swooning over these! One thing about me is I love a veil photo. I think they’re so dreamy and romantic!
Reception
The wedding reception featured a lot of unique touches. Alyx is a tattoo artist and designed all of the temporary tattoos. Another unique feature of the reception was ‘Ghost Post’ – a DIY guestbook made from repurposed vintage Halloween postcards and horror film posters. There were also signature cocktails and mocktails for guests to enjoy. Their cake was made by Black Dog Bakery. Red velvet cake with black icing was the perfect touch. We ended the evening with a sparkler exit to send the couple off.
Final Thoughts On Alyx & Jay’s Romantic Victorian gothic Wedding
Overall, Alyx and Jay’s romantic Victorian gothic wedding is a testament to the importance of authenticity when planning. Showing up unapologetically as themselves made space for the day to be uniquely theirs. Let this be your gentle reminder to plan with intention, and to let go of anything that does not align with you and your partner. It will make for a celebration to remember!
