Setting The Scene – An All Film Engagement Session at Bighorn Lookout
I hold this session close because these two are dear friends of mine. When Bryce and Carra got engaged, I was jazzed to say the least! One of the things Bryce and I have in common is our shared interest in film photography. He’s the photographer friend always bringing his film camera to a party. It was only fitting to leave my digital cameras at home and make this an all film engagement session.
Bighorn Lookout has easily become a favourite spot over the years. It’s a place I’ve shot at many times before. However, this was the first time I’ve ever come across cows freely roaming the lush meadow.
medium format and 35mm film
I used both medium format film (also referred to as 120 film) as well as 35mm film for this session. I had recently gotten a new (to me) film camera – the Pentax 645N. Since getting this camera I have been obsessed to say the least! Medium format will forever have my heart. The larger negatives allow for more detail retention than 35mm. For film stock, Kodak Portra 400 is always my go. I really love the fine grain and the way the greens photograph– the grass always looks so lush and vibrant!
Final Thoughts On This All Film Engagement Session
Overall, Bryce and Carra’s all film engagement session is easily one of my favourites from last summer. As I’m becoming more comfortable with shooting film again, I’m really looking forward to incorporating film into my work more. The colours, soft grain and latitude of film make it more favourable than digital at times. Those dreamy vibes are often difficult to mimic. If you were hoping to add film coverage to your engagement session or wedding, let’s chat about it.
